「紅の夢」 'Kurenai-no-Yume' apple

 紅の夢が咲き始めました。果肉が赤いリンゴですが、花の色も濃いとは知りませんでした。まるで洋物のクラブアップルの花を見ている気分です。花には甘い香りがあります。経済栽培している状態では、木全体がこのピンク色の花で覆われて見ごたえありそう。

The red-flesh apple variety called 'Kurenai-no-Yume' has started to flower.  The flowers are deep pink even after opening, and has a sweet perfume.  They look like crab apple flowers.  I would love to see a mature tree covered with these pretty blossoms.  

こちらは明日にも開花しそう。

These will start opening tomorrow.

今年はこの２ヵ所に花があるだけ。

For the first year of flowering, there are only two clusters of flowers.

さっそく紅玉の花粉をつけておきました。紅玉はシンクイムシの影響で木が弱っているので、実を着けさせません。

I pollinated the Kurenai-no-Yume with these Kogyoku apple flowers.  This tree was damaged by a stem borer and I want it to rest until it recovers.

 グラニースミスがほぼ満開になりました。普通、リンゴの開花には清楚なイメージをもっていますが、この品種は花柄が大きいので近くで見るとハデハデです。

The Granny Smith is almost in full bloom.  Normally, I regard apple blossoms as delicate and modest looking, but the flowers of this variety are large and very showy.

感動している私をよそに、シラっとしたタイガ。オヤツが出ないなら、表情つくる気もなし。

Taiga is not affected by my excitement over the apple flowers.  So long as there is no treat in sight, she remains dissociated.

去年の春に買ったビルベリーが咲き始めました。「暑さに強い選抜実生苗」という内容のセールス文句どおり、去年の酷暑を果樹の木陰で元気に過ごしました。去年は米粒ほどの実が数個とれただけでしたが、今年は花数が多いので期待しています。小粒でも甘味が強かったです。

The bilberry plant I bought in spring last year is starting to flower.  This is a selection from Germany and is meant to be more heat-tolerant than usual bilberries.  True to the sales pitch, this plant endured the incredibly hot summer last year and grew stronger.  With lots of flowers this year, I might get several times more fruits than last year.

花が小さく、おまけに先すぼみの形をしているので、人口授粉しようがないです。これだけ小さいと、ムシが来たところでサイズに制限があります。どうなることやら。

The flowers are so tiny that I cannot imagine what small insects can get inside to pollinate.  Needless today, to pollinate manually is impossible.

サンショウも芽吹いてきました。料理に使うなら、葉っぱが柔らかい今がちょうど良いと思います。

The Japanese pepper plant is a deciduous citrus tree.  When the leaves are soft and fresh, as they are now, it is the best time to use them in cooking.  

この苗は「葉山椒」として180円ほどで売られていた小苗でしたが、育ってみると雌木でした。

My tree is a female plant and it produces peppercorns without male trees.  However, the fruits are far too hot for me and I use only the new leaves.

グラニースミス開花 Granny Smith blossom

 楽しみにしていたグラニースミスの花が咲き始めました。大輪でとても綺麗です。他の紅玉や紅の夢の開花はまだまだ先のことですが、この品種は自家結実性が高いそうなので安心です。でも、念のため、梵天を持って公園のアルプス乙女の花粉を採取してきました。

The first flower of Granny Smith, at last.  The flower is very large and pretty.  The flower buds of other 2 varieties I have are nowhere near opening yet.  Fortunately, according to a site overseas, this variety is self-fertile. 

初夏の気分 Feels like early summer

 今朝は良く晴れて日差しが強いなかでの散歩でした。タイガは今朝は公園ではなく住宅街を歩くことにしました。タイガが年をとってからは、ワンコの行きたいところへ私がついて行っています。今朝は隣の６丁目。わずかに残っている畑の横を通りました。

A fine morning with strong sun light, which reminded me of an early summer morning.  Taiga wanted to walk through the neighbourhood this morning, instead of going to the park.  As Taiga became old, I have been allowing her to choose whatever direction she wanted to go.  This morning, we walked through the neighbouring district where there was a farm field - one of the very few left in our area.

ここは孤高の美しいケヤキの木を眺められるので、私の好きな通り道です。

This path is my favourite walk, since I love looking at this solitary ancient tree from a distance - a Japanese zelkova.

その近くの民家では、数週間前に見たオリープの幼果そっくりの実が色づき始めていました。ブログ友の海月ファームさんに教えてもらったのですが、これは「ウスギモクセイ（薄黄木犀）」と言うのだそうです。他所では見たことのない珍しい花木です。

Nearby, I saw the very rare variety of the fragrant olive tree with fruits on it.  I learnt about this version several weeks ago, when a blogger friend told me about it.

うちの珍しい植物は、西洋サンシュユ（コーネリアンチェリー）のカザンラク。普通のコーネリアンチェリーよりも実が大きく、またデザート用になるほど甘味と香があるそうです。将来、たくさん生ったら生食用だけでなくジャムにもしたいです。

This is my rare tree - a cornelian cherry tree 'Kazanlak', developed in Bulgaria.  Its fruits are larger than normal cornelian cherries, and they are sweet and fragrant, suitable for dessert use.  I am so looking forward to actually seeing the fruits.

リンゴのグラニースミスの蕾が膨らんできました。昨日までは中心の一番大きな蕾に、ピンク地に白いスジがらせん状に入っていて、とても綺麗でした。

The flower buds of Granny Smith apple are getting close to opening.  They are so pretty.  Until yesterday, the largest bud in the middle had white spiralling streaks against the backdrop of deep pink.

「紅の夢」の蕾は遅れがちですが、だんだんと赤味が見えてきました。

私があまり植物のことに没頭しているので、タイガがつまらなさそうな顔をしています。

As I was totally absorbed in observing the plants, Taiga was trying to catch my eyes.

リンゴに蕾 Flower buds on apple trees

 去年の2月に配達されたグラニースミスと「紅の夢」に蕾が着きました。棒苗からのスタートで、もう花が見られるとは何とも嬉しいことです。

とは言っても、グラニースミスはこの1ヵ所だけ。大事な、大事な1ヵ所です。

I bought Granny Smith and a red-flesh variety called "Kurenai-no-Yume" in February last year - both cooking apples.  These trees have flower buds already, having started as bare root one-year old plants.  I am so excited.

This photo is from the Granny Smith tree.  Just one cluster of flower buds this spring, so it is very precious to me.

グラニースミスと紅の夢は、樹形をスピンドル型に作ろうと目指していましたが、今年の冬に「紅玉」を高接ぎしたので、いつまでスピンドルの剪定で行くか決めていません。

I have tried to follow the spindle method but I am not sure for how long I can adhere to it, since I grafted another variety on this tree a few months ago.

こちらは紅の夢の蕾。2ヵ所に出ています。枝を下向きに引っ張ってあるので、その先っちょに着いた蕾の塊は、これから上向きにならないとグラニースミスのような状態になりません。

These are from Kurenai-no-Yume - 2 clusters of flower buds.  Their progress is behind that of Granny Smith since the clusters are still facing downwards.  The neck of the cluster will grow longer to allow the cluster turn upwards.

紅の夢の枝ぶりは、グラニースミスのよりも枝数が多いので形良いです。

This tree has more branches and looks better than Granny Smith.

こちらは紅玉。この苗は20年12月に地元園芸店で買ったものです。他の２品種よりも年季はいっているので蕾のヵ所も多いけど、おととしの夏にシンクイムシに幹をボロボロにされたところからの回復なので、この品種には授粉樹としての役を果たしてもらえれば満足です。

This is Kogyoku, an old variety that was introduced to Japan from the US more than 100 years ago (the original name not known).  I am keeping this as the pollinator for the two varieties above.  The shelf life of this variety's fruits is very short.

この木は普通に主幹型で来たのですが、ちゃんと蕾が出るので、他の２品種もスピンドルは止めて主幹型にするかも。YouTubeを見ていたら、テキサスに住む人が主幹型で樹高150cmもない苗にゴロゴロ実を生らせていたのが参考になりました。クライメートゾーンは練馬区よりも暑そうですが、モンスーン気候でないのが幸いしているのでしょうか。

This tree was plagued by the stem borer 2 years ago.  Although the tree did not die, it still has holes in its trunk, so I cannot expect too much from this one.  Hopefully, the scions grafted on the above two varieties will become sufficient as pollinators.

 今日は真冬に戻ったかのような寒い日。しかも嵐のような強風が一日中吹いていました。今週末までこの寒さが続く予報なので、今年の１月に行ったバラ科果樹の高接ぎの接ぎ穂が枯れないか心配です。

リンゴの紅玉をクッキングアップル２品種に接ぎました。これ↓は「グラニースミス」に接いだもの。

It felt like 'back to winter' today with freezing gale lasting all day.  Moreover, the forecast says that this cold weather will stay up to the end of this week.  I did some grafting on apple and plum trees during January this year.  In response to the warm weather we had over the weekend, the scions started to move, but I am worried that the return of the cold weather might put an end to them.

This is the Granny Smith, with a scion from Kogyoku, another cooking apple.  (Kogyoku, under another name, was originally introduced to Japan from the US more than 100 years ago.  It is still loved as a cooking apple variety.)

バラ科なので２，３日前の暖かい陽気で急に芽吹いてきました。

こちら↓は紅玉を「紅の夢」に接いだもの。紅玉本体は２年前の夏にシンクイムシにボロボロにされたあと、少しは回復したけど本調子ではないので、授粉樹を確保しておくためです。

This one is a red-flesh variety called Kurenai-no-Yume, a very new and rare variety, with a scion from Kogyoku.  Kogyoku was plagued with stem borer during summer 2 years ago.  It has recovered somewhat but I am trying to ensure its continuity, since I want to use it as the pollinator.

盆栽の桜「旭山」の蕾も膨らんできました。去年の春に開花苗で買ったのが、その小さいままで１年経ったので維持が楽です。

The bonsai cherry tree I bought in spring last year has remained as tiny as it was.  The flower buds are starting to come out.

これら↓２か所の接ぎ穂は、鉢植えのスモモ「ハニーハート」を地植えの「李王」に接いだもの。

今年は蕾がたくさん着いているので、初収穫にこぎつけそう。ハニーハートは酸味が少なく、果肉は離核なので、私の理想タイプのスモモです。しかも赤肉なので、ジャムにすると見栄えがしそう。

Honey Heart has never had so many flower buds since I bought the plant 2 years ago.  I am hoping to get some fruits this year.  This plum is sweet with little tartness.  What's more, the flesh comes off the stone easily - an aspect I prize in plums.

スモモとリンゴ Plum and apple

 ２階バルコニーでケイパーが咲き続けています。どの花も夕方に開き始めて、翌朝、日が高くなるにつれて干からびてしまいます。なので、今日の写真も早朝（5:30am）に撮ったもの。実のほうは一個も生っていませんが、今年は花が見られただけでも満足です。

Caper flowers are continuing to bloom.  However, each flower lasts only one night - the flower starts opening in the evening and it withers as the sun rises high the next morning.  These photos were taken at 5:30 a.m. this morning, when the flowers were still beautiful.

同じくバルコニーに置いてある八重咲のジャスミン。夏の開花期間の最後の1輪を今朝収穫しました。ひと月ほどで体力を回復して、秋にまた咲くはずです。冬の間、紅茶でジャスミンティーを楽しむのが恒例になっています。

The last of jasmine flowers from the summer blooming season.  The plant will rest for about a month and then start flowering again in autumn.  I preserve these flowers in the freezer so that I can enjoy black tea with jasmine fragrance during the winter months.

スモモのエレファントハートは、今年は２個しか生りませんでした。１個は野鳥に落とされたけど、袋掛けしておいたこの１個が今朝袋の中で落ちていました。

"Elephant Heart" plum that had fallen this morning.  This is a variety introduced from the US and regarded as a great pollinator.  I grow this variety for the delicious taste.

スモモを見たあと、リンゴの紅玉をイジイジしていたら、ポロッ！　まだ青いのに！

As I was lightly touching the "Kogyoku" apple to see how it was getting along, it fell into my hands!  I am sure I never pulled it.

貴重な収穫なので、まずはエレファントハートの糖度を測定。28.2度で、予想を上回った。実際に食べてみると、いつもの「旨いスモモ」で大満足。ただし、個人的な好みなので他の人がどう感じるか、分かりません。実際、電話で食味について質問したとき、苗の販売元の社長夫人はエレファントハートのことを「美味しくない」と評価していたくらいです。私的には、例えるなら、食味・色ともにオレンジ界のモロのような存在です。今回は収穫直後に食べてしまいましたが、ちゃんと追熟させると果肉は暗い赤になります。果肉の離核性も私にとって大きな魅力。

The Elephant Heart plum's sugar content was 28.2% which is very high for a plum.  Apart from the great taste, another reason why I like this variety is that the stone comes off relatively easily.  The flesh would become dark red if left ripening off the tree, which is another good point.

紅玉のほうは糖度が15.4度と、意外と高い。強烈なエレファントハートを食べた後では、紅玉の味は分かりませんでした。

The sugar content of the apple was surprisingly high with 15.4%, considering that it came off prematurely.  This variety comes into season in late September to October.

 リンゴの紅玉に今年初めて3個の実が生っています。苗は去年の夏にシンクイムシに主幹も枝もボロボロにされたので、今年中に枯れる覚悟をしていましたが、実が順調に育つし来年用の蕾入りの複合芽も数か所あるので、何とか持ちこたえそうです。本当は今年の春に買った「紅の夢」か「グラニースミス」に今度の冬に高接ぎしたいのですが、この２本はスピンドル型で行こうとしているので、枝の剪定ルールによると異品種の高接ぎはムリそう。なので、枯れるまで紅玉として育てます。

The Kogyoku apple plant has 3 fruits growing.  I bought the plant in spring last year but, due to neglect, the plant was eaten alive by bugs during last summer.  I was expecting the plant to die any time but it seems to be recovering even though it has lots of holes.

楽しみにしていたケイパーの初開花。昨日の夕方から蕾が開き始めていたのは気づきました。今朝の５時半に見たときは完全に開いていて、ワンコの散歩から帰ったら写真を撮ろうと思っていました。が、７時頃に帰宅したときにはすでに干からびていました。猛暑のせいなのか、開花が短い花なのか、初めての花なので分かりません。

The caper plant has started to flower.  I noticed this first one opening yesterday evening and, when I looked at it this morning at 5:30 am, it was still beautiful.  However, when I came home from morning dog walk, it had already wilted.  I feel cheated, having looked forward to seeing it for so long.  At any rate, the flower was huge with about 5cm in diameter, as well as being rather beautiful and tropical looking.

上を向いて咲いていた様は、直径数センチの巨大な花でびっくり。すでにシベが乾燥しているので、この花は自家受粉したのかどうかも分かりません。ケイパーは、蕾、小さな実、もう少し大きくなった実をピクルスにできるし、葉っぱも食べられるそうです。

去年の春に苗が届いたときは20cmも無いチビ苗でしたが、今は草丈60cmくらいになっています。ネット上の情報によると、最初の２-3年は成長が緩慢だそうなので、今の直径30cm鉢で数年間大丈夫でしょう。

The plant was less than 20cm when it arrived in spring last year, but now it is about 60cm tall.  According to the information on the internet, this plant grows slowly in the first 2-3 years, so I can look forward to a vigorous bush in about 5 years.

蕾はほかにも控えているので、２番花は即写真にとる予定。

However, there are several other flower buds and I will try to capture the best moment with these.

白柴のオモチちゃんの飼い主さんからブラシをいたたきました。全体がシリコン製で、カーペットやソファーに食い込んだワンコの毛を取るものだそうです。試してみたら本来の意味でとても効果的です。また、試しにタイガの腹撫でにも使ってみたら、毛は取れるし、うっとりしていました。オモチちゃんパパ、有難うございました！

A white Shiba's owner gave me this brush which is very effective in removing dog's hair from the carpet or sofa.  I found out that it is also useful on Taiga's belly and she loves it, too.
